Nuclear Weapon | Smarty Launched into New Career
Born in 2016, Nuclear Weapon by Smart Missile began his racing career in December of 2019. His career was short lived, only last two trials before the decision was made to retire the gelding from racing entirely; he never officially started.
Following retirement, Nuclear Weapon remained at Gold Front Thoroughbreds. While residing at Gold Front, ‘Smarty’ was introduced to Asha Massee.
“My cousin, Brittany Stokes, actually worked at Gold Front and knew Nuclear Weapon and mentioned him to us.”
“He had the kindest eyes that no one could turn away from. He was absolutely stunning and so well mannered, it was a no brainer!”
Asha and Smarty became a team and began the retraining process together.
“The retraining process was a bit of a roller coaster. He was so confident that he already knew what he was doing most of the time, it made it difficult for me to correct him.”
Asha persevered however and soon managed to guide Smarty into his new way of life. This was the first retired racehorse Asha had retrained herself, earning Smarty a special place in her heart.
Together, they compete in eventing and show jumping and are working hard to move up the grades.
“I would really love the opportunity to compete Smarty at Equestrian in the Park in the coming years. It’s been an all-time dream of mine to take him there.”
Their greatest achievement so far was winning Best Performed Off the Track Horse at Hills Show Jumping in 2024.
Smarty is just one of many thoroughbreds who may not have excelled in racing but have found a loving home after retirement and a new niche.
We look forward to following along with Asha and Smarty’s results and hope to see them entered in Equestrian in the Park one day soon.
