Retired Racehorses Venture Out into Dwellingup
Nine retired racehorses competed in endurance riding this weekend in Dwellingup, hosted by the Western Australian Endurance Riding Association. Of these nine horses, there were seven Standardbreds and two Thoroughbreds.
Three seasoned endurance Standardbred’s competed in the 40-kilometer ride, showcasing their trainable nature, stamina and strength. Mad Robber, Living on Love and Northern Emperor all completed their ride to return home safely with their riders.
In the 20-kilometre ride, there was a mix of Thoroughbreds and Standardbreds. It’s great to see Thoroughbreds giving endurance riding a go along with their Standardbred partners. Many of the endurance horses who fall under the off the track category tend to be Standardbred, but there are a few Thoroughbreds who take kindly to the adventure of endurance riding.
Retired racehorses in the 20km ride included Nothing In Between, Ronelledo, Amongst the Clouds, Tunk and Be on Guard.
It was also wonderful to see newcomer, Nicole Burns give endurance riding a try with her Standardbred gelding, Batavia Shuffle. If you are looking for a new discipline to try, endurance riding is certainly something to consider. Off the Track WA sponsor several endurance rides throughout the calendar year, promoting the use of retired racehorses in the endurance discipline. After their ride, participants are issued with custom rosettes that celebrate, “I Completed My Ride on an OTT Horse!”.
