Wet Beginnings at Magenup’s Classic Clinic

While we might have been lucky with the weather for our Training Day in August, September brought forth rain, rain and even more rain. Despite this, several brave owners brought their retired racehorses to our OTTWA Classic Clinic on September 7th, preparing their horses for a new career.

We were joined by many repeat clinic attendees and some new faces, which was great to see! Major Times, Keshaar, Bass Strait, Tex on Legs and Image Keeper are just some of the names who have attended multiple clinics throughout their off-the-track careers.

Our generous coaches were rugged up in their wet weather gear to provide lessons regardless of the weather. Don Hawkins taught groundwork and green flatwork lessons to the new horses just beginning their off-the-track journeys. Don guided handlers through exercises such as picking up feet, moving horses away from pressure and general handling in a new environment. These lessons are incredibly beneficial to owners of retired racehorses venturing off property for the first time and allow horses to settle into the new location. Following groundwork lessons, riders mounted up and were supported as they worked with their horses to settle into a new environment.

Krystal Wang took over the jumping and poles lessons, establishing rhythm and coordination with the horses as they navigated through grids and pole exercises. It was great to see a variety of levels catered for, from the green horses experiencing their first set of poles, to the experienced horses popping around courses under Krystals guidance.

“I wanted to attend and have a calm and relaxed ride and try out a canter off property. The last couple of outings I’ve had haven’t been the calmest of environments, but this clinic gave me exactly what I was after! We had two fantastic lessons which were controlled and relaxed and I walked away with a big smile. Especially after my lesson with Krystal, she’s the best!” – Tamikah, proud owner of Major Times.

Dressage coach, Hannie Byrne, helped riders find relaxation in their horses whilst working on a variety of different factors. Hannie’s expertise allowed the riders to fine-tune their horses, with many ending their lessons with horses who worked beautifully and correctly despite the frequent downpours.

We were also lucky enough to be joined by Donna from Thompson and Redwood who brought down samples of their new product, Equi-Restore: a hydrating mash used for recovery during training, competitions and travel. Thank you to Thompson and Redwood for attending. Don’t forget, owners of retired racehorses can use their OTTWA Passport to claim discounts from Thompson and Redwood through our Herd Hero initiative.

“I find these clinics so valuable and encouraging. I’m FIFO and I try to get to as many as I can. Looking forward to more!” Peta, proud owner of Doreen’s Gift.

“Thank you! These clinics are fantastic for OTT horses, riders and strengthening community ties and awareness of coaches. So grateful for these opportunities.” Pippa, proud owner of Secret Girl.
