True Detective | A New Chapter Off the Track

After an impressive career with Chris Waller Racing and Gangemi Racing, True Detective has now launched into his off-the-track career with Kerry Long. This 2016 gelding, by Shamus Award, finished his racing career with 42 starts, five wins, and 12 placings, earning over $700,000 in prize money. True Detective has made the transition from the eastern to the western parts of Australia, where he is now one of many retired racehorses finding new careers across Western Australia.

Kerry Long, who has owned several retired racehorses, was particularly drawn to Dexter (as he’s affectionately known) due to his striking forelock. Described as having a “beautiful soul,” Dexter has taken to eventing with Kerry, with his speed proving to be a great asset. Kerry shared, “I have so much respect for him, having lived the racing life for so long and being so successful. I often wish he could talk, as I’d love to hear all about his adventures.”

Since retiring from racing, Dexter has embraced his new career as an eventer and show jumper. Kerry’s goal is to continue progressing through the grades, aiming for one-star eventing and 115m show jumping. When asked about their greatest achievement, Kerry reflected, “Seeing him transition from a successful racehorse into a competition horse” has been a highlight.

Off the Track WA wishes Kerry and Dexter the best of luck with their continued partnership and looks forward to following their results. Dexter’s story is a shining example of how retired racehorses can successfully transition into second careers and continue to excel in new disciplines.

*Fun Fact – Waller Racing explained that ‘True Detective’ was named in honour of his sire, Shamus Award, which is also the name of an award for the best private fiction detective story written in the USA.
