River Dance | A Graceful Transition from Racing to Equestrian Excellence
Born in 2012, River Dance is a gelding who has transitioned smoothly from racing to a new life with Christy Poulsen. With a career that included 36 racing starts, 8 wins, and 8 placings, River earned just under $300,000. Since retiring in 2021, River has seamlessly moved into other equestrian disciplines.
Rehomed directly from racing to Christy, River has found a wonderful home and is proving to be a fantastic off-the-track mount. Christy, with over 17 years of experience riding trackwork in both Geraldton and New Zealand, is well-acquainted with Thoroughbreds. She is inspired by their versatility and trainability.
“River is without a doubt, my one in a million,” says Christy, who had been his track rider throughout much of his racing career. There was an instant bond, and it was clear he was meant to be with her after racing.
Following an initial spell, Christy and River began retraining with weekly dressage lessons with their local coach. This led to attending regional OTTWA clinics and jumping sessions with Kellie Ann-Crowe. River took to jumping naturally and has progressed each season. In addition to jumping, River has also tried his hand at show horse, fashions on the field, and even eventing.
Christy and River have formed a strong partnership, with notable achievements including winning the GCEC Most Points Under 1m and Most Points in Show Jumping awards for 2024. They also placed equal third in the Jumping WA series last year. Looking ahead, Christy hopes to move River up to 1.10m classes and plans to compete more in Perth.
River is one lucky horse to have found such a loving forever home with Christy. Off the Track WA is excited to see how this pair progresses in their off-the-track journey and wishes them all the best.
