Ricco Dilo | Azzy and his Big Personality
Ricco Dilo, a September born Standardbred gelding by Western Edition USA, never raced. Instead, Ricco Dilo remained with his owner and breeder for several years before being rehomed to Jessica Williams.
Jess retrained Azzy herself, breaking him to saddle and developing him into a ridden mount.
“He has a very sassy and fun personality,” Jessica commented. “Retraining had its up and downs, but we have gotten through them and have been working together ever since.”
It was Ricco Dilo’s beautiful appearance that first drew Jess in, followed by an introduction to his big, fun and fiery personality. Together, Jess and Azzy participate in show horse events, endurance riding and even dabbling in some eventing; They completed their first one-day event together in Kellerberrin.
“He is such a beautiful boy.”
With short term goals to continue to develop Ricco Dilo further into his off-the-track career, Jess is hopeful for a fun and exciting future with Azzy.
“Eventually. I would love to compete in show jumping with him in Perth.”
Ricco Dilo is just one of the many Standardbreds retired from pacing that have turned their hoof towards jumping and ridden pursuits.
If you too have a Standardbred who has traded the sulky for a saddle, we’d love to hear about their off the track story.
