OTTWA Retraining Program
The OTTWA Retraining Program encompasses two structured retraining pathways that provide tailored retraining and rehoming opportunities for retired racehorses.
- OTTWA Network Retrainer Pathway (NRP)
- OTTWA Estate Retraining Pathway (ERP)
The OTTWA Retraining Program is designed to support horses with a focus on strengthening industry connections with the equestrian community, partnering in positive rehoming outcomes, and expanding the capacity of the OTTWA supported retraining pathways.

HOW TO GET A HORSE INTO THE OTTWA RETRAINING PROGRAM
The last managing owner/ownership group complete the application for the OTTWA Retraining Program. Horses are vet checked and assessed for their suitability for the program. If accepted, they are placed on the rehoming platform for selection by a Network Retrainer.
Horses not selected by a Network Retrainer are eligible for the Estate pathway. Immediate entry into the Estate pathway is not guaranteed and is dependent on available program capacity. Once capacity allows for the horse’s entry, they will begin retraining and will be advertised for rehoming once at an appropriate level of education.
Application Process:
Your horse must be officially retired from racing to the managing owner/group by completing a Stable Return/Status Update.
HOW TO BUY A HORSE THROUGH THE OTTWA RETRAINING PROGRAM
Potential buyers submit an expression of interest, which the OTTWA Retraining and Rehoming Coordinator and the OTTWA Retrainers use to match horses with disciplines and riders that suit them. If there is no good fit among the horses available at the time of interest, the application is kept on file for future horses coming through the Retraining Program.
Buyers are matched with the most appropriate horse based on their experience and requirements. When viewing a horse in the program, potential buyers are encouraged to try the horse more than once, so the horse and rider combination can be assessed for suitability. Ongoing support and advice are provided to new owners, including access to educational material and events, such as OTTWA clinics.
